The Northern Plains showcase some of our most scenic countryside and small towns of Costa Rica, and include points of interest such as Ciudad Quesada, La Fortuna, Caño Negro, Sarapiqui, Monteverde and Tortuguero.
This region offers a wide variety of landscapes and ecosystems; primary rainforests, winding rivers, active volcanoes and vast plains that give you a great selection of activities and places to visit.
Due to the constant and abundant rainfall, this area features wet and evergreen forests and it is covered by large marshlands, as is the case of Caño Negro, which serves as a permanent habitat to 600 of the 850 species of birds identified in Costa Rica. This natural environment serves as sanctuary not only for birds, but also to reptiles, mammals and the prehistoric Gaspar fish.
Adventure activities such as white water rafting and nature-watching are enjoyed on the region’s rivers - Peñas Blancas, San Carlos, Toro, Puerto Viejo and Sarapiqui - some of which are important navigational routes.
